Senior ministers are using the same encrypted messaging apps — Telegram and Signal — as terrorists

SENIOR ministers are using the same encrypted messaging apps as terrorists — for online security.

Brexit minister Steve Baker and Armed Forces minister Tobias Ellwood favour Telegram while Security minister Ben Wallace uses the Signal app.

Jeremy Corbyn’s right-hand man Seumas Milne is also a fan of both apps. Most Cabinet ministers and MPs already use WhatsApp — whose end to end encryption is considered ultra secure.

The super encryption means only the messenger and the recipient can read the messages, photos or videos.

But others are migrating to the rival apps due to enhanced privacy and security as messages can be set to “self-destruct”, like Snapchat, after reading.

The Manchester bombers used Telegram to plan last year’s terror attack while US whistleblower Ed Snowden used Signal to send secret messages.

Telegram is used by more than 20million Iranians without Government knowledge and is banned in China.

But along with Signal, it is now the most downloaded communications app for terrorists.

WhatsApp is the world’s most popular messaging app with 1.3bn users. Telegram has 100m users and Google Play reports 1.5m Signal downloads.
