Shoppers said today that inflation is ‘going mad’ after a 600g tub of Lurpak worth £5.35 was locked up in security netting in Aldi.
A dumbfounded customer shared a video of the protected product on video app TikTok after spotting it in a store in Kidbrooke, south-east London.
It is the latest move by supermarkets to add security to groceries amid fears the cost-of-living crisis is sparking a surge in shoplifting.
The grocer said it was ‘UK inflation going mad’. Inflation is the increase in the price of something over time, and the most recent Consumer Prices Index (CPI) measure put the figure at 10.4 per cent.
The clip shows a tub of the spread sitting on a shelf in the store, encased in a thin black string net, with a black security tag latched on to the end.

She picked up the netted bag by its security tag to inspect it the butter — which was priced at an eye-watering £5.35.
More tubs can be seen behind it on the shelf, all protected by the same measures.
The video has been viewed by more than 7.5million people and has received at least 280,000 likes. TikTok users left more than 3,900 comments about the security measures.
One user wrote: ‘Why is Lurpak butter being held hostage?’ Another said: ‘They can afford the extra protection cost but cant reduce the price.’ A third added: ‘£5 for a bit of salted and shaken milk is a bit nuts.’
In December, it emerged that an Aldi store placed tags on packets of sweets worth as little as 85p.
The budget supermarket’s Rushey Green branch in Catford, south London, has placed yellow security stickers on a range of its confectionary items – including a Kinder Snack Bar priced at 85p, Haribo Tangfastics costing £1 and a pack of five Cadbury Twirls selling for £1.05.
A range of everyday items at supermarkets have been slapped with security tags in recent months following surges in prices, including baby milk formula, cheese, butter and even milk.
Since last year, a 500g tub of Lurpak butter has increased by around 37 per cent in price in Aldi stores, from an initial £3.65.

The current rate of inflation in the UK is at 10.4 per cent. Although overall inflation is expected to fall in 2023, the government has said food price inflation is expected to remain high in the short term.
The luxury butter brand, first produced in Denmark in 1901, has become a staple for millions of households across the country.
