Sick killer soaked trapped wife in petrol and set her alight in dashcam horror

A sick killer doused his wife in petrol before setting her on fire in a “gratuitously violent” attack that ended the life of the mum-of-six, a court has heard.

Katrina Rainey, 53, was able to give an account of the tragic killing to emergency services at the scene at her family farm in Knockloughrim, Derry, before she died in hospital under sedation.

Her husband, 61-year-old Thomas Rainey, previously pleaded guilty to her murder, which he initially denied, the BBC reports.

The sick spouse set his wife on fire in October 2021 as she was getting into her car to go to work, Belfast Crown Court heard.

The court heard that 90% of her body was burned in the attack, suffering injuries that were described as "unsurvivable".

As she turned on her car's ignition, Rainey opened the passenger door, threw the petrol over her and set her on fire.

She was trapped in the car by her seatbelt, according to bodycam footage played in court, and was forced to call for help from her kids by slamming her hand on the car’s horn.

"I needed to get some help so I put my hand on the horn,” she was heard saying before her death.

Prosecutors, who described Thomas’ actions as a “gratuitously violent” attack, said that the couple’s marriage had been unhappy for a long time, adding that Katrina wanted him out of the house.

"She told police she wanted him out of the house and had been to a solicitor," the prosecution said.

They said the apparent reason for the killing was that the accused "feared division of the farm", which he had inherited from a relative.

The judge, Mr Justice O'Hara, said it was the "ultimate act of domestic violence,” adding that the twisted killer would likely be going away for a “significant period of time.”

During a hearing on Thursday, Rainey’s lawyers said there were a number of mitigating factors in the case, including the fact he had a "long history of mental health problems".

He is set to be sentenced on July 5.
