The smash between a minibus and a 4×4 near the town of Albertville seriously injured two of the adults, according to the local officials.

The minibus was carrying 11 people on their way to Geneva Airport from the Alps during the busy half-term ski season.

French officials said the 4×4 was travelling from the airport to Peisey-Vallandry in the La Plagne and Les Arcs resort areas when the accident happened on Sunday, reports The Times.

More than 30 firefighters and two helicopters were sent to the scene of the crash.

The cause of the crash has yet to be determined but officials say driver had not been drinking or taking drugs.

"One of the vehicles clearly left its side of the road but we don't know which one yet," a spokesman for the local police said.

Those injured in the crash were taken by air and road to hospitals in Chambéry, Albertville and Grenoble.

Sunday was one of the busiest days of the year on the region's roads.

Traffic was made worse due to the large number of spectators and support staff from the World Ski Championships in Courchevel and Méribel.

A family of four and a pilot were killed in a tragic accident after their small plane crashed in the French Alps last year.

The tourist plane was reportedly on its first flight, after taking off from the Versoud airfield near Grenoble in southeast France.

Eye-witnesses to the crash tipped off the emergency services, who found the bodies of four adults and a child inside the plane's burnt-out wreckage.

Earlier this year a British tourist died after a "high speed" crash while skiing off-piste in the French Alps.

The man, 50, went into cardiac arrest and suffered serious injuries in the horror accident at the Meribel ski resort.
