Snow chaos may see drivers stranded as three-day blizzard to blanket Britain

A three-day blizzard that is forecast to blanket Britain could leave legions of motorists stranded in their vehicles as snow chaos continues to grip the country.

The Met Office has issued a flurry of yellow weather warnings for the UK and most will not be lifted before the weekend.

Widespread travel disruption is looking to be inevitable, as a consequence, with bus and train services subject to long delays or cancellations.

Road closures, power cuts and injuries from falls or slips are also likely.

Forecasters are warning that heavy snow storms are expected to sweep large areas of central and northern England later today (March 9) and the Met Office has issued an amber alert for snow, warning of "strong winds bringing blizzard conditions" and up to 40cm of snow to an area stretching from Stoke-on-Trent to Durham.

It has also predicted that 10-20cm of snow is expected to fall quite widely, with some places seeing 30-40cm.

National Highways are urging drivers to avoid travelling in the West Midlands and the East of England unless absolutely necessary as less severe yellow weather warnings for snow and ice remain in place for much of the UK.

ScotRail said it aims to run a full service this week, but encourages passengers to check journeys beforehand as disruption due to snow and ice is possible.

National Rail has also announced wintry conditions may cause delays to south-eastern services over the next few days.

Met Office spokesperson Nicola Maxey has said strong winds could create blizzard conditions and snow drifts.

"That Arctic maritime air will cross large swathes of the country (today)," she said.

Maxey added that average snow levels of 2-5cm are expected across much of the UK, with up to 15cm on higher ground in northern England and more than 25cm likely in the Scottish Highlands.
