Staying in your prime after the age of fifty

Staying in your prime after the age of fifty: These people tell you how they did it

Growing older is inevitable. But feeling older is a completely different issue altogether. When you reach middle age, your body and mind may go through a variety of changes. Your body doesn’t behave as it used to, hormones start to become more out of control, and it becomes increasingly difficult for your body to absorb nutrients efficiently.

And importantly, according to UK food intake data from the regular National Diet & Nutrition studies run by Public Health England, the majority of us may not be getting the target RDA (recommended daily allowance) across many key vitamins, minerals and even protein too.

Dr Max Gowland PhD, founder of the Prime Fifty range of nutritional health supplements and Chief Scientific Officer at FutureYou Cambridge

These changes can affect everything from our energy levels and muscle strength to gut and immune health as well as the way our mental focus and clarity ebbs and flows. Lack of the right nutrients also has an impact on more obvious parts of our bodies such as our hair, skin and nails.

This prompted Dr Max Gowland PhD, founder of the Prime Fifty range of nutritional health supplements and Chief Scientific Officer at FutureYou Cambridge to investigate. He looked at how innovations in food supplements might have a role to play in helping people reaching middle age maintain the correct level of nutrition that the natural changes in their bodies’ demands.

‘As we get older, we lose muscle and staying active is the most important thing that we can do. However, it’s a vicious cycle; if you feel tired all the time, you want to do less, the less you do, the more you begin to lose important muscle strength and become more frail.’ says Dr Gowland.

‘Our supplements include the all important B vitamins or ‘fatigue vitamins’, as well as many other vital vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C and D, magnesium, iron, copper and zinc to name just a few. These micronutrients support our health in so many ways. They help us to stay energised, provide essential support for our immune system, bone, brain and eye health plus much more.

Freelance writer and Face yoga teacher, Lisa Barrett, 54, also knows how important it is to stay active as we age. She says:

‘I’m all about keeping vital, strong and active so Prime Fifty supplements are ideal for me. What first attracted me to them was that they’ve been developed by an expert who has worked in the industry and knows about the huge effect nutrition plays on our overall health. ‘Dr Max’ has taken the time to look at the science behind ageing and what we really need as we grow older, because our bodies change, and we may find there are things we need that we didn’t when we were younger. If you’re looking after yourself as well as you can, there’s no need to slow down as you get older.’

Dr Max PhD adds: ‘I’ve made it my mission in life to make it easier for the consumer, by doing all the work researching the science and nutritional data so that all the key micronutrients are included in our supplements specifically targeting those reaching middle age and onwards.’

This was certainly the case for Marilyn Cameron, 73, a retired administrator from Epsom, who still has a very active lifestyle which includes helping care for her grandchildren.

‘When you care for small children you really notice your energy levels. My eldest grandchild is five and when I look back on the last five years I started to notice that I was getting more and more tired and had less energy to do things with her that I previously had.

‘I watched a video of Dr Max explaining about the ingredients in the supplement Fighting Fatigue and was interested in giving them a try.’

Designed specifically to meet the needs of the over 50s, the formulation contains 21 vitamins and minerals, including vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12, as well as folic acid and iron which contribute to reduced tiredness and fatigue. In addition, it contains a patented natural black pepper extract which has been shown scientifically to improve absorption. The ageing gut does not absorb particularly efficiently, so using this natural ingredient helps the gut much better absorb these key micronutrients.

‘In a matter of a few weeks I felt so much more like my old self. I’m so convinced that I’ve taken out a subscription and I wouldn’t be without them anymore.’

Susan Major, a retired deputy secondary school head teacher, in her early sixties, has been taking Fighting Fatigue from Prime Fifty for around two years. She recently started taking Healthy Joints after a fall from a horse. Susan didn’t break any bones but felt bruised for a long time and was struggling to get back to her previous fitness levels.

‘I heard Dr Max talking about collagen in his Healthy Joints supplement along with some of the other key nutrients such as glucosamine and chondroitin and how these can support bones and cartilage. I had been over compensating for the bruises from my fall and didn’t walk as easily as I used to because of it. Within a week of taking it I was walking just like I used to – it’s amazing and I now recommend it to others who need some additional support for their joints.’

Dav Kumar, 53, from County Durham also swears by Fighting Fatigue.

‘I was feeling lethargic and had not been as active as usual during lockdown.

‘I decided to take matters in hand. I joined a gym, started working with a personal trainer and cut down on my calorie intake. But I wanted to make sure I was still getting all the important vitamins and minerals I needed in my diet.

‘This multivitamin gives me the reassurance I want all in one easy to take small tablet. I feel much more like my old self, I’m able to exercise well and I have more energy than I used to.’

But how do all these micronutrients benefit us? B vitamins, for example, play a vital role in energy, as does iodine. Vitamins A, D and K as well as selenium help support our immune and bone health. Vitamin C not only supports our immune system but also helps keep our skin and teeth healthy and even helps our bodies absorb iron more effectively from both our food or from supplements.

Dr Max concludes: ‘Ageing brings new and different nutritional challenges to all of us. The Prime Fifty range is specifically designed to meet those unique needs, to help keep you active and feeling younger for longer. It gives me an enormous amount of pleasure to hear how the supplements I created have helped so many people lead a more fulfilled and active life.’
