A Denver jury has found a 38-year-old woman guilty in the beating death of an 80-year-old man on the Colorado State Capitol grounds.
Stephanie Martinez has been found guilty of criminally-negligent homicide and second-degree assault of a peace officer, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
On May 2, 2020, Martinez beat George Black, pulling him the ground and striking him several times. Black had been sitting on a park bench when the attack happened. The pair did not know each other, the DA’s office said.
After the incident, Martinez was arrested by police several blocks away from the scene. Black was taken to a local hospital where he died.
The jury deliberated for three hours before returning with the verdict, a Thursday news release said. Martinez will be sentenced on Jan. 7.
