Study finds versions of honey in the UK were diluted with sugar syrup

Bee-ware of British honey: Study finds 10 versions of the natural sweetener on sale in the UK were ‘illicitly’ diluted with cheap sugar syrup as government vows to investigate findings

  • All honeys tested in the UK were found to have been diluted with sugar syrup
  • Overall 46 per cent of products across Europe were adulterated with sugar
  • UK Government will now investigate the European Commission’s research

It’s seen as a virtuous natural sweetener – used by millions to perk up their porridge, or to top their toast.

But all honeys tested in the UK for a Europe-wide study were found to have been ‘illicitly’ diluted with cheap sugar syrup.

The Government will now investigate the European Commission’s research as EU officials said use of ‘illicit, cheap ingredients’ put ‘honest producers in jeopardy’.

Its officials had examined honey sold across the continent, including ten products on sale in Britain.

Overall, 46 per cent of products tested across Europe had been adulterated with sugar.

The commission did not reveal which UK brands were involved – but said they were ‘likely the result of honey produced in other countries and further blended in the UK’.

While the highest number of adulterated honeys came from China – Britain’s biggest overseas supplier – the highest proportion showing signs of adulteration were from Turkey, at 93 per cent.
