Submarine expert’s 6 clues as to what went wrong on doomed Titanic sub

A top submarine expert has revealed that, following the release of the first picture of the wreck of the ill-fated Titan submarine, there are at least 6 clues that reveal what went wrong on the tragic voyage.

Last night (June 28), ten broken pieces of the shattered vessel were hauled ashore, after the wreck was found resting close to the Titanic itself.

The US Coast Guard also revealed human remains have been recovered in their search.

The fatal incident saw Hamish Harding, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleiman Dawood all perish on the submarine, along with Stockton Rush, the CEO of the company running the trip, and pilot Paul-Henri Nargeolet.

Now, Dr. Graham-Jones, Associate Professor in Mechanical and Marine Engineering at the University of Plymouth, has given his take on how a series of miscalculations from OceanGate, the company running the Titanic tours, may have led to their deaths.

His analysis comes just days after OceanGate admitted that the Titan’s carbon fibre hull was bought from aerospace engineering company Boeing at a massive discount because it was well past its aeroplane shelf life.

The professor said that the window used on the Titan should not have been put on a vessel that aimed to go down around 3,700 metres.

"I think the guy who ran this was actually making big mistakes, and was overconfident in his calculations,”he told the Sun.

"Cracks would have formed.

"They might not have been seen at first, but they start to become a little bit bigger each time before becoming a critical crack and failing."

Dr Graham-Jones said that dodgy electrics could have caused severe issues with the way the sub was controlled.

He said: "This could have been an electrical catastrophe. It could have been corrosion, it could have been a fire.

"Some of the pipes and parts that lead outside could have begun to leak. If you have a wire going outside, then those wires going through land could actually start to leak. They could have corroded."

Dr Graham-Jones said that even the smallest crack in the hull would’ve led to the ship imploding, given the enormous pressures that are felt thousands of metres below the sea’s surface.

He claims that the "crack could be brittle, or ductile, and related to fatigue and delamination."

The professor added: "By scanning under an electron microscope, you can see the fatigue and confirm the speed and direction of the cracks."

Dr Graham-Jones said that investigators will be looking at whether the mangled wreck shows any signs of heating, corrosion and buckling.

But he added that it’d be difficult to figure out whether these issues were existing problems before the vessel went out to sea, or whether they developed while travelling down to the Titanic.

The professor said that the vessel’s carbon fibre hull may hold all the answers to whether there were any issues with it before it touched water.

Dr Graham-Jones claims that any pressure bulkheads on the sub can highlight the cause of the disaster, but admits the investigation may cause confusion for those involved due to the significant damage from the implosion.

Wires in the vessel's pressure bulkhead, a key component to any pressurised space that keep a tight seal, may have corroded and lead to it failing, Dr Graham-Jones said.

"It is critical to make sure they try and collect carefully so that no further damage is caused to collected parts," he added.

"From visual and magnified views, components’ crack paths can be recorded"
