Traffic chaos as Insulate Britain eco-warriors block Old Street roundabout in London and furious drivers honk horns

ECO zealots Insulate Britain have blocked off a major London roundabout in another day of traffic chaos.

The gormless activists stared straight ahead as they sat across an exit on the busy Old Street roundabout in Islington during rush hour.

Furious commuters desperate to get to work beeped their horns as the banner-clutching demonstrators set up camp at their latest target.

It follows a two-week long string of chaotic blockades by the group.

They blocked off major routes in and around London including the M25, M1, and M4 – leading Boris Johnson to brand them "irresponsible crusties".

The PM told LBC: "There are some people who call those individuals legitimate protesters. They are not.

"They are irresponsible crusties who are basically trying to stop people going about their day's work and doing considerable damage to the economy.

"That is why we have taken the powers and why Priti Patel is doing the right thing to bring in powers so they can get six months or an unlimited fine."

On Monday, harrowing footage showed a woman desperately begging Insulate Britain to "move your cars" as they blocked her from following her 81-year-old mum in an ambulance.

A group of protesters could be seen standing by as the desperate daughter screamed: “She’s in the ambulance, she’s going to Canterbury – do you think I’m stupid? She’s in Canterbury!

"I need to go to the hospital, please move your cars. This isn’t okay!"

Despite her helpless cries, the protesters refused to budge.

"IRRESPONSIBLE CRUSTIES"

And the woman could be heard begging: “How can you be so selfish? This is so selfish. Can you not just understand, my mum is 81 and she’s going to hospital.

“Unbelievable. On your conscience let it be."

Crime and Policing minister Kit Malthouse told Sky News of the footage: "This is really distressing stuff that's emerging now.

"While we obviously all value the right to protest, there is a difference between causing disruption and causing damage.

"We believe that these protesters and some of the others that we've seen in the last couple of years have crossed the line between exercising their right but also their responsibility towards the rest of us, and something needs to be done.

"So, today we're going to be announcing a raft of new measures alongside those that are already in the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill that's going through the House of Lords at the moment that we think will help deal with this problem.

"Specifically recognising the disruption of infrastructure and disruption of the strategic road network is of a different scale of damage than you would otherwise find with a normal protest."
