Traveller family say they've been called 'dirty p*key scum' by locals who demand they leave town in bitter spat

A TRAVELLER family say they have been branded "dirty p*key scum" by locals who want them to leave town.

Danielle McCann, 34, is locked in a bitter spat with angry residents who are demanding she and her five children pack up and go after being refused planning permission for their caravans and trailers.

The family-of-six, who live on a yard on the edge of Cardiff, also claim they have had racial slurs yelled at them and had their stables set on fire.

And they allege their horses have even been dragged through barbed wire fencing, WalesOnline reports.

The latest in the row reportedly saw threatening messages calling them "dirty Gypsy scum" and "p*key scum" attached to their gates on February 28.

The placards also told them to "leave" and "get out of our village, you're not welcome", it is claimed.

Danielle said: "My father-in-law doesn't know how to read and write and he had to ask my 12-year-old and 13-year-old to read it out to him.

"They're being taught in school about racism and this is happening to them.

"How do you explain to a child that it’s okay for people to shout through windows 'Gypsy scum, p*keys, get out'?

"I don't feel safe going down there to see our horses. I always make sure to take another family member with me."

Danielle said she has been applying for planning permission for a caravan and trailers on the site for 12 years as their other home, on a dedicated traveller site, is a "health hazard".

But Newport Council has refused her every time, citing flood risk and insisting "no discrimination is made on an applicant's background or beliefs".

It means she has had to put up with discrimination from Peterstone Wentlooge locals, which has only worsened during the pandemic, she claims.

This has allegedly included a "high volume of fly-tipping in front of the gates" in an attempt to set them up, the windows of their main trailer being smashed, and drones constantly flying overhead.

Dogs have also apparently been let loose on the premises, their horses have allegedly been dragged from a barbed wire fence, and on March 2 someone is said to have tried to start a fire in their stable.

Gwent Police and Newport City Council said in a joint statement: "Hate crime is not acceptable and everyone has the right to feel safe.

"Reports of hate crime within any community are taken incredibly seriously by Newport City Council and we work closely with our colleagues in the police to address such issues."

They confirmed a formal investigation was being carried out with police.
