A bear attacked a man in New Castle early Wednesday morning and the bear was shot dead by police.
The attack happened at about 2 a.m. in the Castle Valle Ranch neighborhood, according to a police department news release.
Officers made contact with an injured man on the scene and then “located and shot the bear involved, which was in the immediate area of the attack,” the release said.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife staff “responded to the scene, where one other bear was euthanized.”
Two other bears in the area climbed up a tree and wildlife officers planned to remove those bears from the area on Wednesday morning.
Further details on the man’s injuries were not released.
As of last week, CPW had put down 63 bears in Colorado in 2022. The estimated bear population in the state is between 17,000 to 20,000.
