Two Pakistani men have today been jailed for life in Greece for gang-raping a British 18-year-old woman on her sunbed after she went for a morning swim on holiday.

The two men, aged 27 and 24, raped the Briton, who has not been named, on a beach in Rethymno, a city on the north coast of Crete, in July 2022.

The Pakistanis, who have not been named, had approached the then 18-year-old as she sunbathed on a sunbed before launching their attack.

The young tourist tearfully told Rethymno court how the two men pinned her down on the sunbed and raped her one after the other, reports the Olympia newspaper.

The woman had immediately reported the gang-rape to the authorities before the police were able to identify and arrest her attackers.

The two men confessed to the gang-rape at the time of their arrest, but during their court appearance today, they claimed that the woman had consented and had stopped when she asked them to.

But the court today sentenced the two Pakistani men to life in prison over the gang-rape. They will serve their sentence in prisons in the Greek city of Tripoli.

Their lawyers have appealed the sentence, according to local media.

The sentencing comes days after two 19-year-old British men accused of raping a British woman and filming the attack in a Greek hotel were released from custody but ordered to report to the embassy in London every month while the investigation continues.

The 24-year-old unidentified Briton claimed the two teenagers assaulted her in her inebriated state in a hotel room last week in Rethymno on the Greek island of Crete.

She alleged the pair filmed the sexual assault on their mobile phones after meeting them at a bar in the city earlier that night.

The woman said the three consumed alcohol and went back to the hotel where the two men were staying. She said she woke up naked the next morning and did not know where she was.

Both men were arrested and appeared in court on Monday where they were released with restrictive conditions and fined.

The two are now free to fly back home but must report to the Greek Embassy in London each month.

It comes two weeks after another British tourist was allegedly raped in the sea during a summer holiday on the Greek island of Rhodes after she visited a beach with a man she met online.

The 20-year-old Briton, who has not been named, told police a 23-year-old Albanian man raped her on June 3 after they went for a swim at Glystra beach on the east coast of the island.

The young woman claimed the man, who she had been speaking to online for two weeks before meeting in person, then took her back to her hotel room in Kiotari where he attacked her and tried to rape her a second time, reports the Vradini newspaper.

The Albanian man, who has not been named, has since been arrested by police on the Greek island on suspicion of rape and attempted rape. He denies the charges.

The British tourist told police that she had met the suspect at her hotel room in the afternoon of June 3 before they agreed to ride on his brother’s motorbike to Glystra beach where they went swimming.

She said that the man then attacked her while they were in the sea and raped her.

The victim walked onto the beach and put on her clothes before begging the suspect to drive her back to her hotel room.

But when they arrived at the hotel at 4pm local time, the 23-year-old man followed her back to her room where he took off her clothes and tried to sexually assault her again.

This time, the woman was able to push him away from her and forced him to leave the room. The victim then left the hotel and reported the rape and assault to Rhodes police.

Detectives launched a manhunt for the Albanian man. He was found hours later and taken to the police station. A case has been filed against him for rape, for which he could face up to ten years in prison.

He has now been released from custody on the condition that he does not leave the country. The investigation continues.
