Two children have been seriously injured in a random knife attack while on their way to school.

The two girls, believed to be aged 13 and 14, were attacked by a man this morning (Monday, December 5) in Illerkirchberg, a town in the south of Germany.

Witnesses immediately alerted police and the ambulance service. The two girls have now been taken to hospital.

The perpetrator fled the scene and hid in a residential building, believed to be refugee accommodation, according to Bild.

Police surrounded the building before storming in, arresting residents including the attacker.

According to SWR, three people were arrested and others were led to safety.

A special police taskforce was deployed to the area, with officers using drones to assess the landscape before launching the raid.

It is unclear what the attacker's motive was or whether he and the two girls knew each other.

Police are continuing to investigate, with a large contingent of officers still at the scene and working with forensics crews.

Police spokesman Wolfgang Jürgens said there was no longer a danger to residents.

He confirmed that the initial operation took place at 7.30am this morning, with local mayor Markus Häußler also at the scene.

Jürgens was unable to reveal more about the health of the victims, nor could he confirm the identity of their attacker.

Roads in the area remain closed off.
