Two students, 18, killed in horror car crash as they drove to prom together

Two students have tragically died in a horror car crash as they drove to prom together.

Lendon Byram and his girlfriend Kalen Hart, both 18, died following the two-vehicle smash in 281st Street and Lacy Road in Hamilton County, Indianapolis, in the US state of Indiana.

Two other students were also rushed to hospital following the incident although they are not thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

They were on their way to the Hamilton Heights High School senior prom at the time of the crash, on Saturday, May 1, night, the Indianapolis Star reports.

The driver of the other car refused medical attention at the scene.

Police are investigating the crash and do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor.

Hart was a senior at Hamilton Heights, while Byram was a junior at Cathedral High School.

The news was first announced on the Cathedral High School Facebook page.

In a post, the school wrote: "It is with great sadness and a heavy heart we share the passing of Lendon Byram '22.

"We ask that you please pray for Lendon's family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.

"Cathedral will have counselors and members of our faith-based community on our athletic/football practice field Sunday at 1pm to gather, grieve, and pray."

"We share our heartfelt condolences to the families of the students impacted by this tragedy," Superintendent Derek Arrowood said in a statement released Saturday night.

"No one expects something like this to happen, and when it does, it leaves an entire community grieving. Please keep these families and our students in your thoughts and prayers."

Kalen Hart's mum, Jody Bartrom Conawayan, posted an appeal on Facebook aiming to fundraise $15,000 (£10.8k) to help pay for the funeral and burial expenses.

"No parent should ever have to bury their child," she wrote.

In another post, with a photo of Byram and her daughter, she added: "This was taken at my mom's retirement party a few weeks ago. I didn’t even get to see my baby girl in her prom dress. I love you so much, Kalen Rae!

"I am so proud of the young woman you were becoming. Rest easy my baby girl."

All prom-related activities were canceled following the crash.
