Two tourists killed at top holiday hotspot in separate brutal attacks including machete rampage | The Sun

TWO tourists have been killed in separate brutal attacks in a popular holiday hotspot in less than a week.

Travellers in the state of Oaxaca in Mexico are on high alert following a spate of shock murders as the summer season gets into swing.

Officials are scrambling to stamp out the worrying rise in tourist attacks after another globetrotter was found dead this week.

A Canadian national was shot dead in a car in the relaxed beach town of Puerto Escondido, authorities revealed yesterday.

The victim – identified as Victor Masson, 27, by local media – was discovered on Monday in the area popular with surfers.

Investigators launched a probe into the man's death but did not hint at the motive for the murder.

Holidaymakers have been urged to remain vigilant, as it marked the second killing in Oaxaca in less than a week.

Tourist Benjamin Gamond, from Argentina, was brutally attacked with a machete on May 12 in the nearby coastal area of Chacahua.

He was rushed to a Mexico City hospital with serious injuries before he tragically passed away on Monday, prosecutors said.

Officials said the machete-wielding suspect, who is also accused of assaulting two other Argentine tourists who survived, is being held on suspicion of murder.

Benjamin's relative claimed he had died "a hero" during a struggle in a post on social media, Reuters reported.

Oaxaca, which has significantly lower crime rates than most states in Mexico, has been rocked by the recent spate of killings.

But tourism across the entire country is expected to take a nose-dive amid a string of suspicious deaths.

In April, eight bodies were mysteriously found in Cancun across a wooded area and an abandoned construction site.

Drug cartels often dump a number of bodies at secret sites in order to dispose of evidence, however, the Caribbean resort rarely sees such grisly findings.

Michael Alcazar, a former NYPD detective, suggested people thinking about traveling to Mexico should reconsider their plans.

He warned: "Right now, it seems the most dangerous time [ever] to travel to Mexico.

"The Mexican Government doesn’t have any control over what’s happening with the cartels. The cartels seem to be running riot."

The high-profile case of US tourist Shanquella Robinson, 25, who mysteriously passed away in October last year while holidaying with pals, has also alarmed travellers.

The owner of a hair braiding business and online fashion boutique passed away in a luxury villa in Cabo San Lucas.

According to an autopsy conducted by Mexican authorities, she suffered a head injury and died of a broken neck.

A disturbing video emerged allegedly showing one of Shanquella's friends beating her shortly before her body was found.

It was determined during the investigation in Mexico that one of Shanquella’s travel mates was the attacker in the incident that was caught on camera.

Shanquella's family and legal team, including attorney Sue-Ann Robinson, hoped that the United States would pursue the case and extradite the suspect to Mexico.

But it was announced in April 2023 that the FBI office in North Carolina – where Shanquella was from – declined to press charges against the alleged aggressor in the woman's death.

Meanwhile, US authorities conducted their autopsy once Shanquella's body was embalmed – which attorney Robinson said compromised the investigation.
