UK to be battered by tropical storms sweeping in from Atlantic as hurricane leftovers bring rain, humidity & flood fears | The Sun

TROPICAL storms sweeping in from the Atlantic will bring heavy rain and humidity over the coming days.

Downpours are expected to be so bad in some areas that there is a risk floodwater could wipe out roads, homes and businesses.

Showers have already dampened much of the UK, bringing an autumnal feel to the start of September.

But conditions are about to get a whole lot wetter from Friday thanks to the remnants of hurricanes Earl and Danielle.

Forecasters say Brits can expect thunderstorms, torrential rain and "gusty" winds – though temperatures will remain in the high teens.

While no yellow weather warnings are in force, the Met Office has said flooding of homes and businesses in Scotland is possible, and driving conditions are expected to be challenging.

Met Office forecaster Annie Shuttleworth said: "More downpours to dodge over the next few days.

"On Thursday, surface water impacts could lead to travel disruption for some of us.

"Into the night there is a continued risk of rumbles of thunder."

Saturday is looking drier, with sunshine and highs of 22C in London, but the rain will come hammering down again on Sunday and into next week.

Conditions will then remain "unsettled", before rain moves "erratically" east.

Met Office meteorologist Aiden McGivern said: "Don't worry, hurricanes Earl and Danielle won't directly affect the UK as fully-formed hurricanes, but they will have some influence on the UK's weather during the next week or so.

"But before that, we've got an extra-tropical cyclone on top of the UK which will continue to bring lots of showers and lively downpours.

"Next week, the rain will be fed by tropical moisture so there will be a lot of warmth and humidity tied up in the system wrapped around Danielle so there could be some very soggy weather."

Met Office chief forecaster Paul Gundersen added: "The influence of low pressure – with associated thunderstorms and bouts of heavy rain – will continue to dominate this week, especially on Friday.

"Though the low pressure will finally move eastwards on Saturday, meaning that many will have a dry day with some sunshine.

"There is a risk of potentially very heavy rain for a time on Friday for eastern and north-east England and southern Scotland.

"Adding in the risk of thunderstorms – which could bring gusty winds and heavy downpours where they form – many can expect an unsettled week.

"During autumn, forecasters have the added complication of trying to estimate the impacts of ex-hurricanes when they work their way into the North Atlantic.

"Although the cooler conditions outside of the tropics cause them to decay quickly, they can bring disruption to weather patterns by bringing lots of moist and relatively warm air which often becomes entrained within other home-grown weather systems."
