UK weather: Brits enjoy 18C sun today – but hail and thunderstorms mean you'll have to bring a brolly | The Sun

BRITS are set to bask in 18C weather today although hail and thunderstorms means a brolly might be needed.

Today started on a rainy note for many as wet weather moved in from the Atlantic but conditions are set to improve throughout the day.

Despite the wet conditions, temperatures will remain pleasant with parts of the southeast seeing highs of 18C, according to the Met Office.

The weather service said that today will be a "brighter day all round".

Forecasters said that there would be "sunny spells developing" but it would be "remaining dull in far northeast".

And some Brits may have to brace for hail and thunder later in the day.

The rest of the day is set to remain cloudy for southern and eastern parts, but Northern Ireland and western Scotland are expected to experience heavy showers and thunderstorms.

The Met Office said: "Showers in west developing elsewhere through the day, some heavy and slow moving with hail and thunder, particularly south and west."

A yellow weather warning remains in place for northern parts until 9pm, with thunderstorms, hail and lightning strikes expected in some regions, disrupting traffic and train services.

The forecasters add that the night will be covered in fog patches in the northwest, while rain starts clearing slowly east but remaining rather cloudy.

Scattered heavy showers will remain, but with clear spells, say the Met Office.

Showers are said to continue across the UK into Wednesday and Thursday amongst spells of sunshine before a dry Friday.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said in a video that the weather “brightens up for everyone” on Tuesday afternoon.

He said: “A day of sunshine and showers to come, some of the showers could be heavy at times, the odd rumble of thunder is possible so there could be some local disruption so it’s worth taking extra care when you’re out and about.

“There will be some sunshine and showers as low pressure dominates the weather pattern however towards the end of the week into the weekend this area of high pressure may just start to build in to give a drier few days.”

The meteorologist said there would be a “good deal of sunshine” across western parts of England and in northern Wales too.

He added: “This will help lift temperatures overall reaching the mid to high teens.

“So it will feel quite warm and that sunshine is strong.”

It comes as the UK recorded its hottest temperature of the year so far yesterday.

The Met Office said temperatures hit 21.6C in Helens Bay in Northern Ireland, on Monday afternoon.

As the coronation was in full swing, the street parties also capitalised on the good weather.

Brits were soaked while taking part in King Charles coronation activities on Saturday.

But the soggy and grey conditions didn’t put off thousands of well-wishers as they lined the streets of London for the big day.
