UK weather forecast – Brits face heavy rain and flood warnings before basking in 18C heat this weekend

BRITAIN will be drenched with heavy rain and flooding before balmy warmer temperatures heat up the nation this weekend.

The Cumbrian coastline and North Sea coast at Easington and Kilnsea are expected to be hit by tidal surges today along with strong winds and heavy rain.

The Environment Agency issued flood warnings for these two areas and said that flooding of homes, roads and farmland is possible.

Residents in Cumbria from Gretna to Silloth including Port Carlisle, Skinburness and Rockcliffe were told to take care near beaches and promenades as the sea spray could be dangerous.

North Sea coastal hamlets Easington and Kilnsea have been told: “Please stay aware of your surroundings and do not put yourself at risk.”

A further 26 flood alerts have been issued for the River Avon, Mersey Estuary and coastlines in Somerset, North Devon and North Cornwall.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin gave this weather forecast: “Many places will be starting drab.

“Across the north it will be fairly soggy and fairly wet across the morning.

“Rain will come through the night across Scotland and it will be fairly wet across northern isles.”

HEATING UP ON SATURDAY

As the weekend approaches things will get a bit warmer with Friday and Saturday seeing temperatures mainly around 17-18C.

Some spots of rain are expected in both North Wales and northern England.

It will be cooler along the south coast with a breeze coming in and temperatures there will be between 11-12C.

Met Office meteorologist Sarah Kent said the UK will get near to the warmest February day ever, which was February 13 1998 when 19.7C was clocked.

She told The Sun Online: "It is going to be a close call. On Saturday, we are looking for places sheltered from the south westerly wind, so those places are going to be to the north of high ground.”

Sarah added that Cardigan Bay, parts of the West Midlands and areas "tucked in" the north east close to the Pennines are most likely to get 18C this weekend.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “Computer models show record 20C February temperatures are possible from the coming weekend.

“Families flying abroad for half-term sun could have stayed home and gone to a UK beach instead.

“Plumes of warm air from the Sahara are due in coming days and also in spring. 25C is certainly likely by April.

“There's a good chance of another fine summer due to the past 12 months’ continuing pattern of high pressure blocking, which brings hot conditions in summer.”

Later this week, Britain could be hotter than Australia — where it is summer — as Hobart, Tasmania, is due only 17C highs from midweek.

And even on Saturday, when the UK could be in record-breaking heat, 18C is forecast for Tasmania.

That would be beaten by the sizzling heat in Britain if the current record is broken.

Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell told The Sun Online: "At the moment, we are looking to reach 18C, most likely in central southern England, or it could be in north-east Wales or north-east Scotland.

"The record is 19.7C in 1998. At this stage, there is a small chance that we could get close, but not for definite."

Becky added: "It is originating from northern Africa and the Canary Islands, so it is coming up from the south.

"There is a big area of high pressure moving across the UK, so it will be nice and sunny too."

The Met Office forecast mainly mild temperatures over the month ahead.

Forecaster Simon Partridge said: “Temperatures will generally be on the milder side over the next 30 days, with short colder spells at times.

“We never said the ‘Beast from the East’ was definitely coming. We forecast settled and potentially colder conditions, and we have had colder spells.

“It’s mild rather than cold as high pressure is situated a few hundred miles further to our east, giving a southerly rather than easterly flow.”
