Despite some patches of fog in eastern England and a cool breeze in northern Scotland, Thursday will remain a mild winter day for the UK. However, as early as Thursday night and Friday morning, frost and fog will impede commuters in northeast England and Scotland.
Temperatures will rapidly become rather cold at the beginning of Christmas week.
Jim Andrews, a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.com, told Express.co.uk: “A strong anticyclone will build northward over the UK Wednesday through Friday before settling over Scotland and northern England at the weekend.”
Mr Andrews forecasts that double-digit warmth will last from Wednesday to Thursday.
For some, the country will see widespread highs of 11-14C, though parts of the north will top out shy of 10C.
From Friday, a northward shift in the centre of the anticyclone will lead to a nationwide cooling trend.
Double-digit highs will become the exception from Saturday, Mr Andrews said.
He added: “Anticyclones are notorious for causing low-level temperature inversions, and this is highly likely going forward.
“Inversions are correlated with outbreaks of fog and low cloud as well as heightened air pollution.
“Light winds, even calms, contribute, limiting mixing as moisture and contaminants are trapped near the ground.”
As for next week, even though the details remain speculative and could change before Christmas, Mr Andrews foresees largely dry and cold weather with high temperatures for most within 3C to 7C.
BBC Weather reports there is potential for a mix of rain, sleet and snow for Christmas, but new phenomenons could disrupt the forecast.
Instead of white snowy Christmas, the UK is expected to spend a gloomy grey hue holiday.
