UK weather LIVE – Emergency Cobra meeting held over 40C national heatwave as new health alert warnings issued | The Sun

DANGEROUS temperatures are expected over the next few days, leading government ministers to hold an emergency meeting.

Ministers are coming up with emergency plans since the Met Office has extended the Amber health warning to Monday.

Temperatures will only reach around 28C today, but there's a chance that temperatures may reach 40C this weekend, causing serious risk to life.

A UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) spokesperson told The Daily Telegraph: "here’s a possibility of a level four heatwave. If it gets above 104F (40C), then it is likely to be a level four heatwave for the first time."

However, forecasting models predicting extreme heat are outliers, meteorologists say – with most believing temperatures will hit the "low to mid-30s" instead.

Met Office forecaster Dan Stroud reassured Brits that such heat is still "unlikely", but said it will get much hotter in the days to come.

"At the moment, we're expecting temperatures to rise over the course of next weekend," he said.

How to stay safe in the heat

With temperatures set to reach a whopping 40C in the UK, here are some easy ways to stay cool.

    1. Don’t keep all your windows open – you might think this increases ventilation, but it actually just lets in all the hot air.

    2. Don’t open your curtains – much like the tip above, we want to keep the heat out. Our windows act like greenhouse glass and keep the heat in.

    3. If you need to go out, stay in the shade – if you aren’t able to, try to wear a hat to keep the sun off your face.

    4. Stay hydrated – one of the simplest tips, but one of the most forgotten. Even if you aren’t exercising, your body is sweating and working to keep you cool, so you’re losing water. Remember to drink to keep your body functioning as it should be.

    5. Wear sunglasses – this tip is important throughout all seasons. Our eyes are 10 times more sensitive than out skin, and its important that we protect them to prevent cataracts; one of the main causes of blindness in the UK.
