UK weather maps show 24-hour snow bomb next week with ‘5cm per hour’ flurries

It looks like Arctic weather conditions might be returning to the UK as early as next week with a 24-hour snow blast on the way.

Advanced weather modelling maps from WX Charts show a heavy bout of snow making its way down the UK, potentially blanketing millions of Brits.

The chilly weather front will make landfall in Scotland in the early hours of Wednesday morning (February 22) before slaloming down the country as the day progresses.

Areas of dark purple indicate snow initially falling at a rate of around 2cm per hour, although that will increase.

WX Charts predict that some parts of Scotland, particularly more hilly regions, could see up to 12cm of the white stuff settle on the ground.

By midday, flurries should have made their way down to the north-west of England and Wales, with Blackburn, Manchester and Stoke just a few of the places in the firing line.

Although snowfall will initially be light in England, by 6pm it could have surpassed conditions in Scotland.

Areas of light purple inside dark purple indicate snow falling at a rate of at least 5cm per hour in the Peak District and Yorkshire.

There will also be a band of intense rain there, with downpours of around 5mm per hour, which perhaps explains why WX Charts don't think more than 1-2cm of snow will settle on the ground in England.

Luckily, the weather front should sweep across the country quickly and dissipate before it has chance to impact many in the south.

By 12pm, the weather maps indicate that only light flurries will remain in rural parts of Wales, with more heavy snow persisting briefly in the far north of Scotland.

This comes after forecasters including the Met Office warned we could see more snow in March.

In a long-range forecast looking as far ahead as March 14, the Met Office said: "Into March, high pressure is expected to develop to the north of the UK and low pressure to the south. This is likely to introduce a north-south split, with drier conditions across the north and wetter conditions in the south.

"Temperatures expected to be mostly around average, but a period of colder or much colder temperatures remains a small possibility and could bring spells of wintry weather."

Netweather forecaster Ian Simpson wrote in his forecast for February 27 to March 5: "It is too far out to have much confidence in snowfall amounts but any northerly outbreaks have a chance of bringing wintry showers especially to northern and eastern parts of the UK."
