UK weather – Platinum Jubilee washout as heavy rain hits amid yellow thunderstorm warning on last day of long weekend

EVENTS marking the last day of the Platinum Jubilee could be a complete washout with heavy rain expected and a yellow thunderstorm warning in place.

The Met Office has forecast stormy weather for large parts of England and Wales with only northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland avoiding the worst.

The weather forecaster warned the thunderstorms could result in “fast flowing or deep floodwater, causing a danger to life.”

It added: "flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds".

The weather warning continued: "Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus service.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closure.

"Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost."

The warning runs from midnight on Sunday to 6pm.

In a Twitter message on Saturday evening, the Met Office advised those hosting a Platinum Jubilee party to check the forecast ahead of any celebrations.

It said: "If you're hosting or attending a street party, or doing something completely different, take a look at our 4cast, as once again there is quite a variety of weather on offer for Sunday.”

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Dan Suri, said: “In contrast to last night and this morning, more places within the warning area on Sunday are likely to see heavy rain and thunderstorms. Where thunderstorms do occur impacts from heavy rain and frequent lightning strikes are possible.

“A few places could see 15–20 mm of rain within an hour, with a small chance of 50mm in an hour, most likely over parts of the Midlands, southeast England and East Anglia whilst the risk of thunderstorms over the northern part of the warning is smaller.

“Then, during Sunday afternoon new showers, some heavy and thundery, are likely over the southern or so third of the UK. North of the warning area in Northern England and Scotland conditions will be much more settled.

“If you’re planning outside events for Sunday, please keep a regular eye on the forecast for your area for any updates.”

Only Scotland is expected to keep the sunnier conditions and, following a colder start, could see temperatures climb to 21C in the northwest.

Millions of people across the country are expected to attend events today as the four-day bank holiday marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee comes to an end.

Around some 60,000 events have been registered to take place today, according to the Royal Family website.

These range from “Big Jubilee Lunches,” which include a “world record attempt for the longest street party to back garden BBQs and everything in between.”
