UK weather sees 27C heat as festival-goers arrive in Reading but rain returns tonight before Arctic blast sends mercury plummeting for Bank Holiday weekend

READING Festival-goers have arrived to set up camp today as the UK enjoys 27C heat – but rain is due to return tonight.

An Arctic blast is set to sweep in to pull temperatures back down for a drizzly Bank Holiday.

Wet weather is due to blanket the whole of the country by tomorrow, despite southerners basking in sunny and humid spells today.

By Thursday, a cold front will push across Devon and Cornwall north – bringing with it blustery showers.

Temperatures could fall 10C, and two to four degrees below average, as rain and hail moves across the UK later this week.

But by next Wednesday we could be back to warmer and more settled weather.

However, Brits must face a drizzly Bank Holiday first, with a wet and windy few days ahead.

The Met Office predicts a set pattern of rainy days to come, after the humid weather for many in the south today.

This evening should see a cool night for much of the country, with rain moving across England and Wales.

Heavy showers are set to move into Scotland and Northern Ireland, before rain is confined to central and southeast England tomorrow.

There will be some sunny spells, but mostly heavy, blustery showers in the north and west.

From Friday to Sunday it will be cool with more rain, although the south may escape the drizzle.

And Sunday will see a fine but fresh start, before gradually turning wet and windy.

Brian Gaze, director and forecaster for The Weather Outlook, told The Sun Online: "Unfortunately it looks as though one of the warmest summers (meteorological summer which is June 1st to August 31st) on record is going to stumble or fall at the final hurdle (Bank Holiday weekend).

"Cooler and more changeable weather is expected to spread southeastwards during the middle part of this week.

"Beyond that details become more uncertain but it looks set to stay mixed through the Bank Holiday period (Sat, Sun and Mon) with the risk of showers or longer spells of rain in all regions.

"However, there should be some drier and brighter spells with the best of them in the south, but temperatures will be disappointing compared to what they've been for much of the summer.

"Maximum daytime values probably won't rise much above 21C (70F) in the south and some chilly nights lead to the possibility of ground frosts in northern locations."
