UK weather – South of England sees clear skies & sunshine this weekend before cold snap brings SNOW next week

BRITAIN has sun-thing to look forward to with a warmer weekend on its way.

Temperatures will reach up to 12C with clear skies and dry conditions in the South and 10C in the North.

It is above average for this time of year, which usually sees up to 10C in the South and 8C in the North.

But Scotland and Northern Ireland will also be cloudier with possible light rain across the weekend.

A heavier downpour with up to 30mm of rain will also strike England and Wales on Monday.

And snow is expected to return with temperatures plunging to -7C later in the week.

Met Office senior operational meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: "It will be much more settled conditions compared to last weekend.

"The further South East you are you will see more sun shine. The further North West, you are more likely to see cloudier skies.

"Generally across England and Wales it is dry with sun shine. It won't feel too bad at all in the sun, unless you are in the breeze.

"Scotland and Northern Ireland will be cloudier and possibly some patchy light rain. It will be largely over the hills.

"Overnight there will be very little change but more persistent rain in western Scotland.

"It will be breezy enough that temperatures stay above freezing for everyone.

"And we'll get the best of the weather again tomorrow with plenty of sunshine in England.

"It will be cloudier in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

"Monday is more unsettled across the UK. Rain could be heavy at times across western England.

"Compared to the weekend it will be cloudier and wetter for most."

Monday will have similar temperatures of up to 10C in the North and 12 degrees in the South.

Calmer weather is forecast from Tuesday, although clear skies could bring frosty mornings.

It comes after the country was battered last week by Storm Eunice and Storm Franklin.

A major incident was declared earlier this week with evacuations taking place amid expected floods.

And a yellow weather warning for lightning and snow was in place yesterday as Brits braced for a -8C chill.

Other areas of the UK hit freezing and hovered around 0C.

Snow and ice slowed down rush hour travel on Friday morning.

And forecasters warned the "chopping and changing" weather is set to stick around into next week.

Icy stretches also formed on untreated roads and the Met Office urged people not to cycle and to take extra care if driving or walking.

More snowfall was expected to hit hilltops in some parts, while gusty winds meant blizzards were possible on higher routes.

The Met Office said unsettled blustery weather would stay over the coming days, especially in the north west.

But conditions were expected to be less severe than the past week.

A number of weather fronts have been set to cross the North, and bring bouts of wet and windy weather – while southern and eastern areas are in line for the best of the fine weather over the weekend.

A jet stream which has driven storm systems across the North Atlantic Ocean is still active but these winds are shifting further north and may allow for more settled weather next week.

The last week has seen storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin cause problems across the country and about 400 properties have been flooded.

The Environment Agency had 31 flood warnings and 30 flood alerts in place on Thursday night.
