Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, of Venezuela, was recognized as the oldest man in the world by Guinness World Records last week – and he’s about to celebrate his 113th birthday.

Pérez Mora, who lives in San José de Bolivar, a city in the western state of Tachira, is set to celebrate turning 113 tomorrow surrounded by family and friends.

Guinness World Records confirmed that Mora became the world’s oldest person after the former record holder, Saturnino de la Fuente Garcia, who was born February 11, 1909 in Spain, died on January 18.

Mora was born on May 27, 1909 and was married to Ediofina del Rosario García for 60 years before she passed away in 1997.

Juan Vicente Pérez Mora says he has been able to live to be able to celebrate his 113th birthday Friday because of his love for God as well as sleeping early everyday and making sure he drinks a glass of aguardiente, an anise-flavored alcoholic beverage

The couple had 11 children and the family expanded to 41 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren, Guinness said in a press release.

‘My dad is in very good health. He does not suffer from any disease that requires medical treatment,’ his daughter Nelyda Perez told Guinness.

‘The next day after resting, he says he wakes up very well. The whole family is very grateful for my daddy’s health.’

Pérez Mora credits his longevity to loving God and praying twice a day, working hard, making sure he is in bed at an early time and drinking a glass of the anise-flavored Spanish liquor aguardiente each day.

Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, confirmed last week by Guinness World Records as the oldest man in the world, will celebrate his 113th birthday Friday

Apart from slightly elevated blood pressure and hearing problems due to his age, Pérez Mora is in very good health, according to his physician, Dr. Enrique Guzmán.

‘He has a good heart,’ Guzmán said. ‘He does have changes due to his age, but he does not require long-term intervention or treatment. I consider that with his activity, with his hygiene and with his diet, he is a person who I think will live to see more years.’

Pérez Mora was the ninth of 10 children born to Eutiquio del Rosario Pérez Mora and Edelmira Mora in the Tachira city of El Cobre before the family moved to the San José de Bolivar village of Los Pajuiles, according to Guinness World Records.

He was barely five years old when he accompanied his brothers and father to work at a farm, where they harvested sugar cane and coffee.

He did not attend elementary school until he was 10, but stopped after just five months because his teacher had fallen ill. However, he was able to learn how to read and write as a result of a book the teacher had gifted him.

Mora, who for 10 years was the sheriff in the town of Caricuena, became the first male supercentenarian in Venezuela when he celebrated his 110th birthday in 2019.

He hopes one day he will be remembered as someone who was a hard worker, faithful to his wife and and the Catholic religion.

‘My uncle Vicente transmits a lot of peace, tranquility and radiates a lot of joy. He is a person who has a lot to give,’ Fredy Abreu told Guinness.  ‘He enjoys the basics of life and is very grateful to God. His family is his support.’
