Thousands ordered to flee as floodwaters rise

At 3.30am, an “evacuate immediately” emergency warning was sent out for people in the small city of Benalla in Victoria’s north-east because of “rapidly rising” floodwaters.

A “major flood warning” was issued shortly after for the area between Broken River and Benalla, with residents urged to “move to higher ground”. Floodwaters are expected to rise from early Friday morning.

“In the 24 hours to 1am Friday, widespread rainfall totals up to 120mm have been observed across the Broken River catchment,” Vic Emergency said.

Residents of the rural town of Wedderburn have been ordered to “evacuate now” by emergency authorities who say the Skinners Flat Reservoir is likely to breach.

The order was issued at 1am on Friday by Vic Emergency as swollen rivers threaten communities across the state in what authorities have called a “significant flood emergency”.
