NORMAL PEOPLE has been voted the steamiest show on telly after scooping the gong for Best Intimacy at this year's Sex on Screen Awards.
The hit BBC Three series came out on top after viewers voted for Marianne, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Connell’s (Paul Mescal) tender first time making love as their favourite saucy scene, beating Netflix’s racy regency drama Bridgerton.
Sexual wellness app Emjoy polled 200,000 users from around the world to see what TV show or film turned them on – or off – in the last 12 months.
Here, The Sun’s sexpert Georgette Culley reveals the rest of the results and tells why some hit the spot and others flopped…
Winners…
The Best Sex Scene…
Normal People
Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal's on-screen relationship as complicated couple Marianne and Connell in BBC Three drama Normal People won both the stars a huge fan base.
Georgie says: “This clip shows the moment Marianne and Connell have sex for the first time.
"It’s tender, awkward and refreshingly honest – showing all the messy realities which come with sex."
Runners up…
Sex Education
In season 2 of Netflix's Sex Education, Mr Hendricks, played by Jim Howick, and Miss Sands, played by Rakhee Thakrar got viewers very hot under the collar.
Georgie says: “In this saucy scene Miss Sands shares her deepest desires with fellow teacher Mr Hendricks, and he indulges her by talking dirty in bed.
"This show has been great for smashing taboos and shame around talking about sex."
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Noémie Merlant as Marianne and Adèle Haenel as Héloïse have been praised for their on-screen chemistry.
Georgie says: “Sometimes less is more, and that's definitely the case with this lesbian love story.
"When Marianne and Héloïse have sex for the first time all we see is a suggestive close-up – letting our imaginations run wild.”
Bridgerton
In racy Netflix period drama Bridgerton, Phoebe Dynevor as Daphne and Regé-Jean Page as Simon played the roles of a newly married upper class couple, exploring sex together for the first time.
Georgie says: “The dashing Duke left viewers hot under the collar when he taught inexperienced debutante Daphne how to pleasure herself. She later touches herself alone based on his advice."
And for The Worst Sex Scenes…
Winner: Spenser Confidential
In Netflix film Spenser Confidential, a sex scene between Mark Wahlberg as Spenser and Iliza Shlesinger as Cissy Davis felt 'unbelievable' to viewers.
Georgie says: “We are supposed to believe that Cissy Davis willingly has sex with her stalker when he’s following her home.
"Rather than being spontaneous and sexy, it reinforces a damaging narrative, often played out in mainstream porn, that women who are being sexually harassed enjoy it.”
Runners up…
The Great
Georgie says: “It’s no surprise this scene failed to get pulses racing.
Among the worst sex scenes, Elle Fanning as Empress Catherine II of Russia and Nicholas Hoult as Emperor Peter III failed to impress audiences in the first episode of Hulu series The Great.
"While the pair consummate their marriage, Emperor Peter shows no interest in pleasuring her and talks to an associate about hunting while they have sex. Charming.”
The Boys
A sex scene in episode five of the second series of The Boys which involved Homelander, played by Antony Starr, and Stormfront, Aya Cash, was also rated among the worst.
Georgie says: “Rough sex can be fun but if anyone tried the Superheroes' violent foreplay they'd end up in A and E.
"It left viewers saying ouch, not ooh ah."
Normal People
In episode nine of BBC Three drama Normal People, viewers were left uncomfortable watching a sex scene between lead character Marianne and her boyfriend Lukas, played by Lancelot Ncube.
Georgie says: “Viewers found this scene uncomfortable to watch.
"Marianne is in a bad place emotionally and is treated like a sex object by new boyfriend, Lukas (Lancelot Ncube) who takes x-rated snaps of her restrained, even though she’s not enjoying it.”
