Rugby clubs go woke: Warwick and Cardiff Universities BAN ‘hazing’ initiations as traumatised students recall practices including drinking alcohol off teammates’ testicles

  • Former students told of  humiliating punishments in interviews posted to TikTok
  • Challenges included throwing eggs at female bar staff and public naked hazing
  • Universities warned of disciplinary action against students involved in hazing
  • Video has since been deleted and disclaimer added claiming details fabricated

Warwick and Cardiff Universities have banned ‘hazing’ initiations after traumatised students recalled practices including drinking alcohol off teammates’ testicles.

Challenges also included throwing eggs at female bar staff, public naked hazing and locking new club members in cupboards.

It comes after two former students at the two top universities revealed the various sports society initiations and punishments in interviews posted on TikTok.

The videos have since been taken down, while the original footage now has a disclaimer claiming details of the initiations were fabricated.

Jack, a former Warwick University player, explained of a practice called ‘The Seed’ that occurs in ‘most circles’ at university rugby clubs, The Tab reports.

He said: ‘So, you’d have to get fully naked, curl up in a ball. Someone would come over and throw a pint over you, like you’re flowering the seed.

Jack, a former Warwick University player, told of punishments including ‘The Seed’ and the ‘fountain of youth’

Cardiff University’s main building. A spokesperson said any student found to be in breach of its policies ‘will be subject to disciplinary action’.

‘And then you’d have to slowly grow up into a flower, fully naked.’

Jack explained it was a ‘fair’ punishment for talking over the chairman of the club.

He also recalled a second practice named the ‘fountain of youth’ involving Jäger bombs.

Jack added: ‘You get someone’s ball sack, and you stretch it out. You get someone to lie beneath it.

‘You get a Jäger bomb and you pour it over their [testicles] and someone has to drink it from beneath.’

Meanwhile, former Cardiff University football player Fergus described how, when picking a venue for a social, they would ‘always go somewhere we know we’re never going to be invited back again’.

During one such social in his second year at the university, he said one player had thrown an egg that struck a female bartended in the face.

He said: ‘I think it’s worth taking the smashed glasses and every now and again a toilet’s going to get fucked and the doors are going to come off because of the amount of money they make off us.’

Fergus also gave a second example of a punishment that included locking ‘freshers’, those new to the team, in cupboards with strobe lights and loud techno music until they had completed a particular task.

The pair also told of initiations for first year students that included removing their bedding and curtains and trying to rip off their underwear aboard coaches.

But a spokesperson for the University of Warwick has warned of disciplinary action against any student found to be involved in ‘hazing’.

Jack, a former Warwick University (pictured) player, explained various hazing punishments that students had undergone

A statement added: ‘The University of Warwick does not tolerate hazing.

‘All students who join the university agree to comply with our Dignity at Warwick policy, which outlines the values we expect our community to uphold, along with a code of conduct for the Students Union.

‘Any report or complaint against a current student or staff member relating to a breach of our policies will be investigated and where proven, disciplinary action taken.”

A Cardiff University spokesperson added: ‘We are not aware of the instances described in this podcast – and they appear to be historic.

‘CU football club has faced disciplinary action in the past due to poor behaviour.

‘CU football club has worked in partnership with the Students’ Union in recent years to ensure its current leaders and members fully understand the expected standards of behaviour and the consequences of not fulfilling those obligations.

‘We are clear that initiations or similar behaviour have no place at Cardiff University.

‘The University and Students’ Union have policies in place related to conduct and behaviour.

‘Any student found to be in breach of those policies will be subject to disciplinary action.’
