We were told to fork out £28k after my mum fell ill on the holiday from hell – she had to fly home on a medical plane

A DAUGHTER was almost forced to fork out £28,000 on a medical plane for her mum after she fell ill on a holiday from hell.

Mandy's elderly mum Jennifer Wardle was left battling pneumonia and septic shock just days after arriving in Gran Canaria last year.

The 70-year-old, from Teesside, North Yorks., had flown to the holiday spot on November 8 – and was on life support within just three days.

Jennifer spent weeks in hospital on the island and when her family tried to fly her home, they were told they would need to fork out £28,000 on a medical plane.

They eventually managed to find a flight to take her for £6,000 – but the sum would not be covered by Jennifer's insurance.

Mandy, who set up a GoFundMe page to cover the costs, said: "It was £6,000 to get her home.

"But £6,000 is better than £28,000, and it was worth it to get her back."

She added: "We only got £900-something from the GoFundMe – we just got a lot of trolls bad mouthing us, leaving nasty messages.

"We started a JustGiving page and got a thousand pound from that, but the rest we had to borrow."

Mandy said her mum is still not fully better, "but she's much better than she was over there".

And two months on, the worried daughter said doctors are still none the wiser as to what bought the life-threatening conditions on.

"Nobody seems to have a clue," she said.

"It was scary not knowing what was going on, especially with the language barrier. We were so relieved when she came back."
