Weather forecast UK – Britain faces 'messy' winter conditions this week as Arctic blast brings snow and freezing rain

ARCTIC conditions are set to sweep across the UK next week, bringing three days of snow and freezing rain in an icy blast following floods.

It comes after the UK experienced its “coldest night of the winter yet” amid a raft of yellow weather warnings for snow and ice.

Following temperatures dropping to as low as -15C in Scotland, Sunday morning saw cold and frosty conditions, with widespread ice causing tricky driving conditions.

Weather warnings cover East Midlands, East of England, London & South East England, North West England South West England, Wales and the West Midlands.

There was widespread flooding on Sunday, with the Environment Agency posting over 230 flood warnings and alerts across the length of the UK.

    Rather cloudy and damp today. Breezy and staying cold.

    Today:

    A rather cloudy and damp day, with some outbreaks of patchy light rain and drizzle at times, especially first thing. Perhaps the odd brighter interlude is likely during the afternoon. Breezy and staying cold. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

    Tonight:

    Dry with some clear spells initially this evening, with perhaps a touch of frost in places. However, cloud and rain will arrive from the west overnight, with freshening winds. Minimum temperature 2 °C.

    Today:

    Dull and misty start in the south with some drizzle. Drier and colder further north with sunny spells, but snow showers affecting some eastern and northern parts of Scotland. Occasional rain and some hill snow for Northern Ireland later.

    Tonight:

    Some snow for central and southern Scotland in the evening, whilst a band of rain in the southwest moves north, turning to snow over northern England later.

    A powerful winter storm is expected to dump deep snow on swathes of the northeastern United States including New York City today after blanketing the nation's capital.

    The National Weather Service issued storm warnings from Virginia to Maine — home to tens of millions of people — and predicted snowfall of 18 to 24 inches (45-60 centimeters) in southern New York, northeastern New Jersey and parts of southwest Connecticut.

    New Jersey governor Phil Murphy issued a state of emergency ahead of the storm's expected arrival Sunday night, allowing authorities to close roads, evacuate homes and commandeer equipment needed for public safety.

    UP TO 20CM SNOW EXPECTED THIS WEEK AS UK BRACES FOR ARCTIC BLAST

    The Met Office has warned that up to 20cm of snow is set to fall in parts of the UK this week as temperatures fall as low as -15C.

    It comes as yellow weather warnings for ice remain in place across the south of England and parts of Scotland, with travel disruption expected.

    Areas including Wales, the West Midlands, Oxfordshire, and London could see snowfall in the coming days, while parts of the north are expected to get a heavy covering later in the week.

    METEOGROUP WEATHER FORECAST FOR MONDAY

    The Meteogroup has released it's weather forecast for Monday day and evening.

    While it will be dry for many, "wintry showers are likely across Northern Ireland, the eastern Scottish highlands and the Northern Isles.

    It continued: "It will be rather cloudy across the southern UK, but it will be dry. It should be drier and brighter across parts of Wales and northern England. Light north-easterly winds."

    Bur Monday night will see "rain move east over Northern Ireland, Wales and south-west England where it will be heavy. A risk of snow for Scotland.

    "Dry for a time for the eastern half of England. After midnight, the rain will move east to all areas with snow pushing into northern England."

    SATURDAY SAW PARTS OF ENGLAND AFFECTED BY FLOODING AND HEAVY RAIN

    Police in Hertfordshire reported “extensive flooding” affecting a number of properties in Long Marston on Saturday afternoon, after heavy rain fell throughout the day.

    Popular beauty site Chesil Beach in Dorset was battered last night during a brutal storm with a car being washed away by giant waves.

    Sea and rain water poured thrashed onto streets with at least one person left needing urgent medical attention.

    SNOW CHANCE

    More than 5,000 people have signed a petition demanding a binman who was sacked for kicking the head off a kid's snowman is given his job back.

    Callum Woodhouse, 19, was dismissed by Herefordshire Council last week after he was caught on CCTV "kung-fu" kicking the head off a snowman that had been built by a three-year-old.

    WINTER STORM ORLENA GUNNING FOR UNITED STATES

    Heavy snow and blizzards are set to leave 100 million people shivering across 20 states.

    A foot of snow is due to be dumped in New York by the winter storm, while icy winds will send temperatures plummeting.

    Winter storm watches and weather advisories are now in effect across 20 states, says the the National Weather Prediction Center.  

    Areas facing the wintry blast range from parts of the Northern Plains and southern Great Lakes to the southern Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic states and New England.

    'REAL MESSY MIX' OF RAIN, SLEET AND SNOW AS CONDITIONS SET TO GET WORSE ON TUESDAY

    The cold snap is reportedly being caused by a "dense pool of cold air" from Scandinavia.

    The wintry weather will continue next week after some more settled conditions.

    Met Office meteorologist Simon Partridge said: "We've got this band of rain sleet and snow that's moving across much of England and Wales through today. That is a real messy mix."

    He added that conditions are set to get even "more interesting as we go into Tuesday and the middle of the week".

    Temperature maps from the weather agency showed the mercury plunging to -15C in rural areas of Northern Scotland, and as low as -6C in the North of England.

    The lowest temperature recorded before this was -13C in Dawyck Royal Botanic Gardens in the Scottish Borders, the Met Office said.

    Snow and ice warnings are in place across the UK with temperatures to plunge as low as -15C.

    The warnings come after Britain was battered with torrential rain, with 265 flood alerts across the UK.

    Snow and ice weather warnings cover much of the UK above Birmingham tomorrow.

    The yellow weather warnings caution that travel disruptions may occur and that some rural communities may be cut off.

    The warnings are due to last until 11:59pm on Tuesday, February 2.
