A huge Hollywood-style sign has been erected on a slag heap on the outskirts of Wrexham in north Wales.
The giant white letters spelling out the name of the market town welcomes drivers arriving on the A483 dual carriageway.
It is unclear exactly who is behind the new landmark, but it comes just months after Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the town’s football club, Wrexham AFC.
Earlier this year, Reynolds and fellow actor McElhenney finalised their takeover of the club and invested £2million.
The actors officially took control of the National League side in February and plan to make a documentary about it, although they have so far been unable to visit Wales due to Covid restrictions.
It is not yet known if they are aware of the sign but there was some unconfirmed reports that they may have been involved in its arrival.
Huge letters spelling out Wrexham have appeared on the outskirts of the north Wales town resembling the Hollywood sign which has baffled and impressed the local community
The giant letters were spotted just one day after the football club beat Curzon Ashton in their final pre-season friendly 3-1.
Locals in Wrexham are baffled – but suspect Deadpool star Reynolds is to thank for the touch of LA on their slag heap.
Dog-walker Pete Leyshon said: ‘This has just got to be Ryan Reynolds doing this – who else would do it. It’s fantastic.’
Michael Roberts went to investigate the huge letters as they were being built.
The Wrexham sign (left) bears an uncanny resemblance to the iconic Hollywood sign in the US (right) and lead many to speculate that Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are behind the stunt after completing their takeover of Wrexham AFC in February this year
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the town’s football club, Wrexham AFC, in February this year and have invested £2million with their eyes on promotion this season
He said: ‘There were about six lads putting the sign up. They were in a white 4×4.
‘Whoever has done it has put a lot of effort into it and must have had permission to get through the gate at the back of the slag heap.’
Wrexham finished 8th in the National League last season and Reynolds is now targeting promotion to League Two.
Although the takeover came as a shock to many when the details initially emerged, Reynolds has insisted he was always serious about his ambitions for the non-league club.
Speaking to the Telegraph last month, Reynolds said: ‘We take the growing and building of both Wrexham AFC and Wrexham the community very seriously.
‘In a town like Wrexham, if the football club is going to do very well, the community has to do very well.’
Asked what his goals are, he said: ‘Huge: promotion, promotion, promotion.’
Their new series Welcome to Wrexham, will focus on the next chapter of Wrexham AFC – the oldest club in Wales and the third oldest professional football team in the world.
Wrexham is not the first UK town to get the Hollywood sign treatment as Basildon Council in Essex installed a small version of the sign back in 2010 at a cost of half a million pounds
The all-access documentary series will focus on the stars’ takeover of the club and the Red Dragons’ progress in the league.
A UK broadcaster hasn’t been revealed yet, with the release date to be confirmed.
Wrexham is not the first town to get the Hollywood sign treatment. In 2010, Basildon council spent almost half a million pounds installing a lettered sign that spelt out the town’s name.
A number of people have already visited the site in Wrexham to take photos, including one individual who said it was ‘massive.’
And the sign has already attracted attention on social media, with one fan referring to it as ‘such a good thing to have.’
Another said: ‘So Wrexham is really running with the Hollywood theme. This has just appeared. […] Love it.’
Whilst another person responded to the display in a tweet earlier: ‘This is brilliant. Absolute class. Well done all.’
