At least two people were killed — including a 12-year-old boy — and more than 150 others hurt in the West Bank on Sunday when a bleacher collapsed during a packed holiday prayer service at a Jewish synagogue.
The ultra-Orthodox house of worship was still under construction but being used for the Shavout service in Givat Zeev near Jerusalem when tragedy struck, officials said.
In addition to the young boy killed, a man in his 50’s also did not survive the collapse, Israel’s emergency-response service told a local outlet.
The holiday service was being held at the synagogue even though the building’s owners didn’t have the proper permits, said the head of the Israel Fire and Rescue service to Israel’s Channel 12.
“This building is not finished. It doesn’t even have a permit for occupancy and therefore let alone holding events in it,” the rep said.
