What happened to Kyle Stephens' father?

KYLE Stephens was abused from the age of six by serial pedophile and the team doctor for USA Gymnastics Larry Nassar.

As a young girl, Kyle was abused by Larry Nassar, a family friend, for six years as her family would visit him every Sunday for dinner.

After years of suffering from the sexual abuse, Kyle told her parents what was happening.

But instead of believing her, Kyle’s parents demanded their daughter apologise to her abuser.

It was only in 2016 when Kyle read the story of another woman who had been abused by Nassar, that she called the police.

The police were able to obtain a search warrant for Nassar’s house, where they then found hard drives containing 37,000 images and videos of child pornography, leading to Nassar’s arrest.

Now, Athlete A, a new Netflix documentary, shares the stories of the women, including Kyle Stephens, who were abused by Nassar and their fight for justice.

What happened to Kyle Stephens' father?

Kyle Stephens and her parents were family friends to Larry Nassar, a respected doctor for the USA Gymnastics team.

But while the family visited Nassar every Sunday in his family home, Nassar would take Kyle and her brother down to the basement to play hide and seek.

Once Kyle had been separated from her brother, Nassar would masturbate in front of her.

On another occasion, he molested her underneath a blanket while watching TV on the couch.

Despite telling her parents of the abuse she suffered for six years, Kyle’s parents did not believe her.

It was only when Nassar was arrested that Kyle’s father found out the truth.

Once Kyle’s father discovered what had happened, he tragically took his own life.

What has Kyle Stephens said about his death?

Nassar pleaded guilty to sexual assault on a child in November 2017.

By that time, 156 women had come forward to testify against him.

In January 2018, Kyle Stephens became the first woman to take the stand against Nassar and tell her harrowing story.

She told the court that her father had taken his own life when he discovered the full extent of Nassar’s abuse of his daughter.

Stephens blames her father's suicide on the shame and self-loathing he felt for defending Nassar.

She told Nassar: “Little girls don't stay little forever. They grow into strong women who return to destroy your world.

“I testified to let the world know that you are a repulsive liar.”

Later, Stephens said her father had apologised to her “countless times” when discovering the full extent of her abuse.

While reading her impact statement in court, Stephens revealed that her father had multiple mental health issues before he committed suicide.

By the time he died, Stephens said her father had “made it right. I cannot say that enough.”

She added: “He messed up big, but he made up for it big time. When he left this world, he was my rock.”

Did Kyle Stephens' father believe her claims about Larry Nassar?

When Kyle Stephens told her parents she was being abused by family friend Larry Nassar, they did not believe her.

Instead, they told their young daughter to apologise to her abuser.

It was only when Nassar was arrested that Kyle Stephens’ father discovered the abuse had in fact taken place.

Speaking to Nassar in court in January 2018 while testifying against him, she said: “You convinced my parents that I was a liar.”

She went on: "After my parents confronted you, they brought you back to my house to speak with me.

"Sitting on my living room couch I listened to you tell me that no one should ever do that, and if they do, you should tell someone.

Stephens said Nassar convinced her parents she was lying about him hiding "lotion in the basement so you could beat your penis while I hid.

"But I still get sick at the smell of that lotion."

She said: "You convinced my parents that you didn't pull my feet into your lap, unzip your pants, and rub your erect penis against my bare skin.

“But I still flinch when my feet are near someone's lap."

"'You convinced my parents that you didn't stick your fingers up my adolescent vagina.

“But I knew, when it came time to use my first tampon that my hymen wasn't intact."

In 2018, the judge consoled the 29 women and girls who spoke, or had their statements read out in court, saying they should not blame themselves.

Nassar has pleaded guilty to molesting females with his hands at his Michigan State University office, his home and a Lansing-area gymnastics club, often while their parents were in the room.
