What is the George Cross medal?
The George Cross medal is less known but just as prestigious as the highest award for military gallantry – the Victoria Cross.
It is the the highest honour the Government and the presiding monarch (the head of state)can award a member of the public for gallantry outside the field of action..
The medal itself is silver and on one side depicts patron saint St George slaying a dragon with the inscription "For Gallantry".
The other side of the medal has the recipient's name engraved upon as well as the date on which it was presented.
What is the George Cross medal awarded for?
The late Queen'sQueen's father King George VI instituted the George Cross medal in 1940.
The honour was to be awarded to those who had carried out“acts of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger.”

How much is a George Cross medal worth?
A George Cross medal is reported to be worth anything from £3,500 to £4,5000.
The GC medal has been awarded408 times since 1940 to 394 to men, 12 to women, one to the island of Malta and another to the Royal Ulster Constabulary .
In July 2021, it was announced that the NHS had been awarded the Cross.
