A POPULAR trend involving tortilla chips is sweeping social media and users are taking part in the online craze.
The viral One Chip Challenge is one Internet craze where the participants are facing a mixture of reactions due to the level of spice infused into the Paqui tortilla chips, which are the center of the trend.
What is the One Chip Challenge?
The one chip challenge quite simply asks you to eat this one tortilla crisp to see if you can withstand the extreme heat from the pepper flavour.
It is flavored with the scorpion pepper and the Carolina Reaper pepper which people reported to be the hottest in the world.
The idea is – if you can handle the heat, you've won the challenge.
Social media is ablaze with people taking on the task with varying levels of success.
In January of 2022, three high school students from Lodi, California were hospitalized following their attempt of the craze.
In April of 2021, a middle school youth from Tyler, Texas was hospitalized for taking part in the hazardous trend as well.
Is the Carolina Reaper the hottest pepper on the planet?
Originally named HP22B, the pepper is a world record holder.
Back in 2013, the Guinness World Records dubbed it the "hottest chilli in the world", meaning it stole the crown from another spicy pepper, the Butch T pepper from Trinidad.
The Carolina Reaper's world record was contested due to claims the Dragon's Breath Chilli Pepper is spicier than it's American rival.

Which celebrities participated in the One Chip Challenge?
Ellen DeGeneres had actress Kristen Bell attempt the challenge up against actor Michael Peña on her show.
Other celebrities who participated in the craze include Shaquille O'Neal, Lil' Yachty, Sean Evans, among others.
Besides celebrities, there are a number of vloggers and YouTube stars who've given the challenge a go, including The Crude Brothers and David Parody.
Over in the United States, a news anchor on a local Denver news channel even threw up live on air after the heat proved too much for her.
