A GUN salute is due to take place to remember Queen Elizabeth II.

Britain's longest reigning monarch tragically passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022, just two days after being photographed with new PM Liz Truss.

What time is the gun salute for the Queen?

The gun salute to remember the Queen's 70 year reign will take place across the United Kingdom at 1pm on Friday, September 9, 2022.

96 rounds will be fired to mark each year of Queen Elizabeth II's life.

The Queen was Britain's longest reigning monarch, having been on the throne for 70 years, when she passed away at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

A period of national mourning has started in the UK and will continue for 10 days.

A period of Royal Mourning will take place until seven days after the Queen's funeral.

The bells of St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Windsor Castle will toll at noon in tribute.

There will be a remembrance service at St Paul's at 6pm, attended by Prime Minister Liz Truss and other senior ministers.

The gun salutes will take place across the UK:

  • Belfast, Hillsborough Castle – 105th Regiment Royal Artillery
  • Cardiff, Cardiff Castle – 104th Regiment Royal Artillery
  • Colchester – 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery
  • Edinburgh, Edinburgh Castle – 105th Regiment Royal Artillery
  • Gibraltar – The Royal Gibraltar Regiment
  • London, Hyde Park – The King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery
  • London, HM Tower of London – The Honourable Artillery Company
  • Larkhill (Stonehenge) – 14th Regiment Royal Artillery
  • Her Majesty’s Naval Base Devonport
  • Her Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth
  • York – 4th Regiment Royal Artillery

Announcing the gun salute in Hyde Park, London, a statement said: "Royal salutes will be fired in London today at 1300hrs BST in Hyde Park by The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery and at the Tower of London by the Honourable Artillery Company.

"One round will be fired for each year of The Queen's life.
