Wheat Ridge convenience store clerk shot and killed

A Wheat Ridge convenience store clerk was killed Thursday night after being attacked in the store.

Officers responded to the store at 12300 W. 44th Ave. about 8 p.m. Thursday to reports of “suspicious activity” where they found the store clerk, who was also the owner, dead, according to the Wheat Ridge Police Department.

Video surveillance showed the clerk being attacked by someone who then shot and killed him. The shooter then fled in the clerk’s vehicle.

“This is a terrible tragedy; please keep his family/friends close to your hearts,” the department said in a statement. “This type of crime is extremely rare in Wheat Ridge, and we know this is shocking news for our tight-knit community.”

Police said they will not be releasing any suspect or vehicle information yet while they attempt to locate both.

They said this will be an “exhaustive investigation.”
