The great loss triggered a 10-day period of mourning – but what happens next?

When does mourning for the Queen end?

National mourning is several days designated by the monarch or the government that honour a person that served their country and recently passed away.

The UK started its 10 days of national mourning after Buckingham Palace announced that the Queen sadly passed away.

The day the Queen died – September 8, 2022 – has been referred to as D-Day with every day after referred to as D+1 and D+2 and so on.

The sombre period has seen Union Jacks flown at half-mast and books of condolence opened for well-wishers to send their love to the royal family.

The Queen’s coffin was be taken to Parliament, where she will lie in state in Westminster Hall until her funeral.

Media coverage has also reflected the mourning period – with TV and radio stations expected to follow a code of conduct.

Parliamentary business have been suspended for 10 days and the London Stock Exchange is also expected to close for a short period of time.

What happens after the Queen's funeral?

The Queen will be laid to rest beside her husband Prince Philip.

It will remain entirely private, as a "deeply personal family occasion".

The national anthem will be played as the royal family depart for Windsor by car.

At 3.53pm the procession will halt at bottom of the west steps to the Chapel and the bearer party will carry the coffin up.

St George's Chapel will be opened to family and household staff, and about 800 people are expected to attend.

At 4pm, the committal service begins. The coffin procession will head down Central Aisle to Catafalque, and the service will be conducted by the Dean of Windsor.

The coffin will then be lowered into Royal Vault, while a Sovereign piper plays a lament.

The funeral will be concluded with a private internment at 7.30pm at Windsor Castle.

What has happened during the national period of mourning?

A number of significant events have taken place since the Queen's death on September 9.

Queen Elizabeth II's coffin travelled to London from Scotland by royal plane on Tuesday, September 13, 2022.

In poignant scenes, Anne, 72, arrived St Giles' Cathedral just after 4pm to escort the Queen's coffin back to the Palace.

She travelled with the late monarch as the coffin was moved from St Giles’ Cathedral to Edinburgh Airport by road.  

The Queen arrived home at Buckingham Palace for the final time after her coffin was flown back from Scotland on an RAF jet.

Princess Anne accompanied her late mother on the emotional journey back to the Palace on Tuesday, where members of the family gathered to meet them – led by King Charles III and the Queen Consort.

Thousands joined the queue in central London to see the Queen lying in state in Westminster Hall, which is open 24 hours a day ahead of the funeral.

Charles embarked on a tour of the UK during the mourning period, visiting Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
