Where is Kane Mitchell now?

VICIOUS killer of 11-week-old Teddie is serving a life sentence, after smashing the baby's head in a “violent” assault.

Kane Mitchell, 32, will spend a minimum of 18 years in jail before he can be considered for parole.

Who is Kane Mitchell?

Kane Mitchell, 32, murdered 11-weeks-old baby Teddie Mitchell in November 2019.

He inflicted a “catalogue” of injures to Teddie, consistent with being "gripped hard", "shaken vigorously", and "having his head struck against a hard surface".

At the time, Mitchell shared a flat with the boy's mother, Lucci Smith, 30, in St Neots, Cambridgeshire.

He was found guilty of murder on January 14, 2021, after a jury ruled he had inflicted the fatal injuries.

Cambridge Crown Court heard Mitchell and Smith had been in a relationship for eight months and had lived together with baby Teddie.

During the trial, the jury heard how Teddie had suffered weeks of neglect and rough handling at the hands of Kane Mitchell, who isn’t his biological father.

Police were alerted to the case after baby Teddie became unresponsive and was rushed to hospital on November 1, 2019, where despite efforts from medical staff, he passed away 11 days later.

Judge Mr Justice Knowles said that Mitchell, squeezed Teddie with so much force that he fractured the boy's ribs and his collar bone.

He said that the assault also involved the "violent striking by Mr Mitchell of Teddie's head against a hard or unyielding surface".

During the trial, the jury were read statements from neighbours who said they had heard arguments coming from the address on a regular basis and that the household had been unsettled since Mitchell moved in.

In a police interview, Mitchell claimed he was Teddie’s biological father, but DNA results following the death revealed it was actually Liam Gibb, 34.

Where is Kane Mitchell now?

Kane Mitchell was found guilty of murder, following a four-week trial.

On February 5, 2021, he was sentenced to life in prison, which he is now serving.

Mitchell was ordered to serve a further five years concurrent for causing or allowing serious harm to a child.

Both him and the mother, Lucci, have been barred from activities with children.

How long will Kane Mitchell spend in prison?

Mitchell was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum tariff of 18 years, minus the time served on remand.

This means he will spend at least 18 years before he can be considered for parole.

Detective Inspector Lucy Thomson, who was leading the investigation, said: “This was a tragic and terrible case in which an 11-week-old baby lost his life at the hands of a person who should have been there to protect him.

“Our year-long investigation found that Teddie had suffered multiple horrific injuries during his short life, which neither Mitchell or Smith could account for."

24 Hours in Police Custody, a popular Channel 4 programme, is highlighting the investigation into the murder of baby Teddie.

The two-part special, titled Cold to the Touch, comes out at 9pm GMT on Monday, January 3, 2022, and Tuesday, January 4, on Channel 4.
