Who is Augusto 'Willie' Falcon and is he still in prison?

NETFLIX'S new six-part documentary series, Cocaine Cowboys, revolves around the War on Drugs in Miami during the 1970s and 80s.

The series is about "Los Muchachos," Sal Magluta, Augusto "Willie" Falcon and his brother, Gustavo Falcon, who built a reputed $2billion drug empire in Miami.

Who is Augusto 'Willie' Falcon?

"Willie" Falcon is one-third of Miami's infamous Cocaine Cowboys.

Falcon, a Cuban immigrant who, along with his longtime friend Magluta, was accused of trafficking nearly $2billion in cocaine in the 1970s and 80s.

The trio were accused of importing and disturbing over 75 tons of cocaine.

At the high of his drug trafficking spree, "Willie" was allegedly married to Alina Rossique.

The pair had three children together: Aileen Martinez, Jessica Falcon and William Falcon.

Alina was shot repeatedly in the face and killed as she left a Coral Gables beauty parlor in August 1992.

She died almost instantly, police said. She was 33-years-old at the time of her death.

A federal grand jury indicted both Falcon and Magluta in April 1991 for drug trafficking crimes, including operating a continuing criminal enterprise.

Both Magluta and Falcon were found not guilty after a lengthy trial before Judge Federico Moreno.

Following the trial, the United States Attorney's Office directed an investigation into Magluta and Falcon's finances that ultimately revealed that their jury members – including the jury foreman – had been bribed.

Magluta, Falcon, several of the jurors, their associates, and even some of their lawyers were ultimately charged with various criminal offenses arising from the conduct.

Magluta was eventually sentenced to 205 years in federal prison, while Falcon received only 20 years after striking a plea deal with the government.

Willy's brother, Gustavo, was the last of the infamous Cocaine Cowboys to be sent to prison.

Gustavo disappeared rather than standing trial with "the boys," which was the nickname for "Willie" and Sal.

He continued to be on the run from police for another 26 years.

In January 2018, Gustavo pleaded guilty on one charge of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute cocaine in a multiple-count indictment.

He was held accountable for arranging a 400-kilo shipment of Colombian cocaine from Southern California to South Florida in late 1989.

He was sentenced to 11 years in prison, which he is currently serving.

Is Augusto 'Willie' Falcon still in prison?

As of November 2018, "Willie" Falcon was no longer in federal custody after being released from prison and deported.

In 2003, Falcon took a plea deal and was sentenced to 20 years behind bars but was released from federal prison in 2017 and immediately taken into ICE custody.

A Justice Department spokesman, Steven Stafford, confirmed Falcon’s departure, saying simply in a statement: “Mr. Falcon Ramos has been removed from the United States.”

At the time of his deportation, CBS News confirmed that instead of being shipped back to his native-Cuba, Falcon was, in fact, deported to the Dominican Republic.

Falcon’s departure appeared to be the result of a deal with the Justice Department in which he would stop fighting deportation if he was allowed to go to a country other than Cuba.
