Why do some royals wear a blue sash? | The Sun

MEMBERS of the Royal family have always adhered to tradition when it comes to their attire – especially during ceremonial events.

But why do some royals wear a blue sash and what does this mean? Here's everything you need to know.

What does the blue sash mean on royalty?

Certain members of the royal family will wear a blue sash to symbolise their role as a member of the Order of the Garter.

It is the oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry in Britain, established by King Edward III in 1348.

King Edward III was so inspired by tales of King Arthur and the chivalry of the Knights of the Round Table that he set up his own group of honourable knights, called the Order of the Garter.

The Order included the Queen, who was sovereign of the Garter , several senior members of the royal family, and twenty-four Knights or Ladies chosen in recognition of their work – in the past, they have included Sir Winston Churchill and Sir John Major.

Women can be members, but they are referred to as Ladies Companion while male members are called Knights Companion.

According to the royal family's website, an appointment to the Royal Victorian Order is "the personal gift of the Sovereign, this honour is awarded to those who have served The Queen or the monarchy in a particular way."
