Will there be a US military draft?

THE US stopped using the draft in 1973 and has no current intentions of re-imposing it.

It comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered reservists and regular citizens to be drafted into the country's military.

What is the US military draft?

The US military draft is the mandatory enrolment of citizens into the armed forces, according to usa.gov.

Though entry into the US military has been voluntary since 1973, Congress could at any time reinstate the draft.

This would likely occur in the event of a national emergency.

The Selective Service System is the department that is responsible for listing men and running the draft.

In the event of a draft, almost all men aged between 18 and 25, who are US citizens or immigrants living in the US will be required to register.

Will there be a US draft?

As it stands, there is no US draft, and there hasn't been one since 1973.

To date, there have been no reports of Congress reinstating the draft, but it can do so at any time.

Congress is also considering a bill to include women in the draft, according to The Conversation.

When was the last US draft?

The US typically employs a lottery system for picking draftees, which it last did during the Vietnam War.

The last man to be inducted into the US Army was on June 30, 1973.

The draft was introduced for the First World War and saw just over 2.8 million people conscripted between September 1917 to November 1918, according the Selective Service System.

During World War II, over 10 million US citizens were enlisted between November 1940 to October 1946.

And during the Korean War, around 1.5 million were conscripted for the three-year conflict that began in 1950.

The last time the draft was introduced was during the Vietnam War.

Between August 1964 and February 1973, more than 1.8 million men were drafted.
