Woman, 70, dies just weeks after being 'DROPPED' on floor during hip surgery and 'bumping her head'

A WOMAN died just weeks after being "dropped" on the floor during hip surgery.

Jeannette Shields, 70, "bumped her head" during the fall from the operating table after undergoing the procedure at Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

Her husband John said she was initially being treated for for gallstones when she left her bed to go to the toilet by herself after getting no response to her buzzer.

He told the BBC she felt dizzy, fell and broke her hip.

Two days later, Jeannette had surgery to repair it, but the hospital phoned John to say there had been an incident.

The doctors told him the operation had been successful but that "unfortunately they dropped her off the operating [table] after the surgery", he said.

The 78-year-old added: "Then they had to use the sliding board to pick her up and rush her in and do scans on her.

"She had a great big bump on the back of her head and she just deteriorated and then she just passed away, just died.

"I'm shocked, I'm really shocked."

It is not clear exactly what happened, but North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Trust said an investigation was under way "in relation to an incident involving a patient in one of our theatres".

John said he told the hospital he will not be "pushing this thing under the carpet" and described the way the situation had been dealt with as "disgusting".

Jeannette's daughter Vikki said her family alerted nurses to the bump on her head, adding: "You've never seen a bump like it."

She sadly passed away six weeks later on May 21.

John demanded a post-mortem after being told there would not be one into his wife's death.

A spokesperson for the NHS trust said it was "unable to comment on ongoing investigations" and that "the findings will be shared with the family and with our regulators in line with normal procedure".

They added: "The outcome of the investigation will also determine any further action that we will need to take."
