The body of a pensioner has been found in her home in northern Italy more than two years after she died.
Marinella Beretta’s decomposed body was discovered last Friday near Lake Como in Lombardy.
The fire brigade attended her house after complaints a tree had fallen down in her garden due to overgrown vegetation, Como City Hall press officer Francesca Manfredi confirmed.
Ms Beretta’s body was found sitting on a chair in the living room, CNN reported.
Forensic scientists have established she died sometime towards the end of 2019 based on the extent of decomposition.
Her cause of death is as of yet unknown.
Ms Manfredi added no relatives have yet come forward and police are currently investigating whether she has any remaining family.
Ms Beretta’s body is still at the morgue and a funeral date has not yet been set.
The mayor of Como, Mario Landriscina, said he will invite the residents of the town to attend the funeral.
He said: ‘I will try to be there and I invite the city to be present.
‘This is the moment to be together, and even if this woman had no relatives, we could become her relatives.’
He said the local government would take care of the funeral arrangements.
She was reportedly not on the authorities’ list for assistance from social services.
Elena Bonetti, Italy’s minister for family and equal opportunities, posted on Facebook: ‘What happened to Marinella Beretta in Como, the forgotten loneliness, hurts our consciences.
‘Remembering her life is the duty of a community that wants to remain united.
‘Taking care of each other is the experience of families, institutions, of our being citizens. No one should be alone.’
