Worker dead after being crushed at level crossing project near Shepparton

A man has died after being crushed by a truck at a rail project on the Shepparton line, leading to train cancellations on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred at the site of a level crossing upgrade on Bunganail Road in Wahring, north of Nagambie, where a truck and trailer delivering quarry material tipped over while reversing about 3.10pm.

A man working as a traffic management subcontractor at the Rail Projects Victoria site was acting as a spotter for the truck when it tipped over. He died at the scene.

Police said they would prepare a report for the coroner. WorkSafe also attended the scene and confirmed it was investigating the death.

Rail Projects Victoria chief executive Evan Tattersall said the agency was deeply saddened by the death and expressed condolences to the man’s loved ones.

“We take safety very seriously on our projects,” Tattersall said.

“Rail Projects Victoria will work with the project contractor to ensure the team onsite is fully supported.”

Work on the project has ceased while the project contractor works with relevant authorities as part of any recommencement.

The incident caused buses to replace trains for two services on the Seymour line on Wednesday afternoon with later services having minor delays.

Passengers on the V/Line network experienced delays for much of the day as train services were not operating across the network earlier in the morning due to a communications fault.
