Mayoral candidate Andrew Yang insisted he was just being “friendly” after getting into hot water for laughing when a comedian asked him if he “choke bitches” during sex.
Video of the brief interaction shows Yang respond with a big smile and laugh while signaling to cut the video after the man asked him: “He choke bitches, Andrew Yang? He choke bitches?”
The wannabe mayor smiles throughout the clip as the comedian — identified on YouTube as Lawrence Reese — peppers him with questions.
“Can a man keep his Timbs on?” Reese asks, stumping the visibly confused wannabe mayor with a question about having sexual intercourse while wearing Timberland brand boots.
“Can a man keep his Timbs on?” Yang responds quizzingly, to which Reese clarifies: “Yeah while he’s f—ing bitches, can a man keep his Timbs on?”
“Oh my,” Yang responds — his smile briefly disappearing as he realizes the substance of the question.
“I think it’s truly up to your partner, right?” he says. “I mean if your partner is cool with it, then …”
“Consensual! That’s why I’m saying!” Reese exclaims, followed quickly by: “He choke bitches, Andrew Yang? He choke bitches?”
Confronted by reporters immediately after the interaction, Yang insisted he “obviously … didn’t think it was appropriate.”
“I think most New Yorkers know that I try to be friendly to people,” he said. “In this case, someone wanted a video and I thought I’d be friendly. But then he said something that made me realize it wasn’t funny at all, so I walked away.”
The brief interaction outraged Yang’s detractors, including five female elected officials supporting opponent Scott Stringer.
“We couldn’t believe our eyes or ears. When Andrew Yang was asked by supporters about violently assaulting women, he responded by laughing,” the women said in a statement.
“This isn’t a laughing matter, and it isn’t just ‘locker room talk.’ Language like this perpetuates real violence against women.”
