When the entire concept of a TV show is an escalating series of feuds between martial arts schools, you’re going to need some convincingly fit young actors to play the combatants. And they can’t just look the part–they need to be able to bring a real physicality to their roles, or else the whole series falls apart.
So when Tanner Buchanan–the man tabbed to play karate student and Miyagi-Do’s resident bad boy Robby Keene in Netflix’s breakout hit Cobra Kai—works out in the gym, his main focus is on training his body for peak fight scene performance. He welcomed the MH crew into his lockdown garage training space to walk us through the five movements he has used to bring a convincing presence to five of his toughest fight scenes in the show.
These exercises are all presented as supersets, which means that you’ll perform two moves back-to-back with minimal rest. Give the routine a try yourself—just don’t go off getting into karate feuds once you’re done. Keep the fighting in the dojo.
