From peachy shades to frosty eyes, 70s makeup is making a return

Over the past few years we’ve seen 70s fashion hit the mainstream, from flares and wavy patterns to knitted vests and jumpsuits.

But it seems the era’s beauty looks are making a triumphant return as well.

On the whole, 70s makeup was made up of two entirely different vibes – but, generally speaking, eyebrows were thin, lips were glossy and eyelashes were long.

Peachy and healthy-looking skin was the first key trend of the decade, alongside more dramatic makeup, such as vibrant eyeshadows and glitter – echoing the disco and glam rock movements.

We’ve rounded up some of the 70s beauty looks that are coming back around.

It’s worth pointing out that some of these returning styles won’t be for everyone.

But hopefully there’s something even minimalists can incorporate into a beauty routine – one way or another.

Blue eyeshadow was a trend that moved from the 60s and into the 70s.

Now pastel blue eyeshadow is slowly resurfacing for 2021 and beyond, appearing in palettes from Makeup by Mario, Jeffree Star Cosmetics and more.

Flush with blush

A healthy-looking complexion was a key trend of the decade, with flushed and rosy cheeks being incredibly sought-after.

But this has also been the case throughout 2021, as people have moved away from bronzer.

We’ve seen a blusher revival this year as more beauty lovers are incorporating it into their everyday looks, to add another dimension to their makeup.

Glossy lips

With lots of heavy eye makeup dominating the 70s a more muted lip became a popular choice. Subtle gloss was chosen time and time again to complement bold eye looks.

Not to mention it was also perfect for the disco era, with its light reflecting qualities.

We’re seeing people turning to gloss as an alternative to lipstick right now (no doubt also due to the resurgence of Y2K trends) – but expect to see more of it over the coming months, too.

White liner

A whole host of makeup artists are opting for white liner again.

Applied to the inner waterline, white eyeliner can help make eyes look bigger and brighter, and gives off a captivating ‘doll eye’ effect.

Statement lower lashes

The 60s and 70s were for known for eyelashes, but the latter decade saw a shift to focus on the lower lashes – an area that’s often neglected.

There are so many ways to make these stand out, either with graphic looks underneath the lash line – as demonstrated by @beatsbylizzie – or by layering on mascara to the lower lashes.

Peach tones

Peach-toned blush paired with matching lipstick was a trend seen throughout the 70s and it’s something that’s popping up again right now.

And it’s not hard to see why, considering it gives off such a healthy and radiant glow.
