Chrome nails have been taking over the celebrity-manicure game for a while now, and Lizzo was one of the latest to join in on the trend at the MTV Video Music Awards. But while the singer’s nails looked downright expensive, her manicurist, Eri Ishizu, shared exactly how she achieved the chrome look.
Recently, chrome nails shot up in popularity due to their sleek, metallic look and borderline holographic finish. Their simple but futuristic style makes them the perfect choice for any big event, but they do require a very specific type of polish that, until recently, wasn’t widely available. Thankfully, Ishizu is here to break down exactly what products she used.
“STEP 1: Start by applying one coat of OPI GelColor Stay Classic Base Coat,” Ishizu wrote on Instagram alongside photos of Lizzo’s silver nails. She adds that if you decide to use the OPI nail-lacquer products at home, the instructions and materials you’ll need to get the look will be slightly different, and you should opt for the OPI Natural Nail Base Coat ($10) for this first step instead.
“STEP 2: Apply one coat of OPI GelColor in ‘Clean Slate’ (from OPI’s new Fall Wonders Collection),” she says. “For the nail lacquer version, swap out with OPI Nail Lacquer in Clean Slate.”
Now that you have a solid base, the next step is where the magical chrome effect comes into play. “STEP 3: Next use OPI Chrome Effects in ‘Mixed Metals.’ For the at-home version, opt for one coat of OPI Infinite Shine in ‘Silver on Ice ($13),'” Ishizu says.
To finish it off, Ishizu recommends the OPI GelColor Stay Shiny Top Coat, or the regular OPI Top Coat ($11) if you’re doing your nails at home. Follow those steps, and you should be able to re-create the exact manicure Lizzo wore at the VMAs. If you haven’t tried the chrome-nail trend yet, it’s about damn time.
